The radio show writes proudly that it was an inspiration to Kari from Long Island, New York. Kari found out about the http://www.banoxycontin.com and signed it. Kari was then inspired to create a BaN OxyContin group on Face Book. It is efforts like Kari's that will help bring a greater awareness concerning the marketing hoax of OxyContin. Kari too believes that America needs to be educated. More on the "hoax of OxyContin" next week.
More importantly this week, Kari has already attracted the special interests who keep the myth alive concerning the use of narcotics for chronic pain. The comments are all classic and predictable. All will appeal to our compassion for taking care of those truly in need of pain and follow up with a reminder that addiction is a moral issue for the individuals who become addicted. The fact that people who take the drugs as prescribed by their doctor and become dependent and addicted is never brought up. It is made clear that people like Kari who suggest controls and greater information concerning the legal narcotics courtesy of the FDA doesn't get it. There is a character flaw with the person who doesn't understand how important it is to continue the unlimited distribution of the drug that is interchangeable with heroin.
In Kari's case, one writer had the audacity to accuse her of having an "immature response to a complex problem". Interesting how it turned out the "older person" created the immature response directed towards Kari when it was Kari who had the mature response to address the problem OxyContin started almost 14 years ago. OxyContin has become a symbol for the growing drug epidemic in our country.
Shame on the pain management industry for attacking a young person who is reaching out and trying to make a difference. I am proud that Kari has brought out their true character.
