From the 2/22 Show - “Incomprehensible Demoralization” - A Must Read

February 23, 2009 12:17 by larry

Jared Combs, author of Incomprehensible Demoralization ( www.jaredcombs.com ) joined me after the bottom of the hour. Jared’s book is an autobiography that describes addiction and the addicted mind through self analysis and humor. The book is a relatively “quick read” and every page holds you with the seriousness of the disease of addiction and a touch of Jared’s humor. For those of us who are trying to save a family member, Jared’s explanation and pointed insights about an addict has given me an added perspective to the challenge my family continues to face. Jared helped me accept that an addict must reach one of two outcomes for change. It appears that an addicted brain must either reach “bottom or death” - my words not Jared’s.  In Jared’s book, “bottom” brings hope. For a loving family, we never give up hope that the bottom can be reached safely.  I do encourage all reading this will give Jared’s book a look. Your comments are welcome.

One thing that the program of AA teaches those of us in the program is that we don't have to reach a particular bottom...just a bottom. My bottom doesn't have to be your bottom. If we're blessed enough to be shown the program early on before we end up living the stereotypical alcoholic/junkie life under a bridge drinking from a paper bag while shooting narcotics, then we have the opportunity to look around the meeting room and see where the disease took other people. Sometimes this can help raise the bottom.
My bottom was pretty low, but actually it could have been much worse. By AA meeting standards, it's a fairly high bottom. Heck I kept my wife, my house, and my wristwatch!
I'm sure that AA is not the only way to get clean and sober, but it's where I found what I needed to stay that way. Thank God for bottoms. Without them, you either die or you just exist in a horrible, directionless life for the duration.
