From the 12/28 Show - Serious Question For the Medical Community

December 29, 2008 11:54 by larry

The year 2008 is leaving with a bang for the Prescription Addiction Radio Show.  The Obama Transition Team on Health Care is beginning to receive letters from a newly formed group called “Advocates For Prescription Opioid Drug Reform”.  A quote from Dr. Kirk Van Rooyan’s letter ( http://media.novusdetox.com/dependence.php?include=137616 ) begins to state the problem well:  “For more than a decade prescription opioids have been aggressively marketed to America’s physicians for treatment of chronic, non-cancer pain of moderate severity.  As a result, hydrocodone prescribing increased by 198%, fentanyl by 423%, oxycodone by 588%, and methodone by 933% during this period, and 80% of the world’s prescription opioid supply is now consumed in the U.S”.

I am confident that as the message from this group and the radio show is heard by more people around the country common sense will begin to prevail.  Before the drug companies created the name “pain pills”, we called them narcotics.  Narcotics (disguised as pain pills) have now permeated every city, town and community in our country. The question can now be asked: has the medical community become morally corrupt and is simply following the money to these drugs or has the medical community become incompetent?  Your comments are welcome.

Larry, regarding your question "Has the medical community become morally corrupt and is simply following the money to these drugs or has the medical community become incompetent?", I think it is some of both. Hard to say how much of each - I believe there is a definite prioritization of profit above all else, but I also believe that there are probably those in the medical community who have heard the false rhetoric for so long that they actually believe it. Perhaps some doctors are too close to their patients to be able to discern who is really a patient in need versus someone who is reflecting a dependency or addiction. In addition to the motive of profit and the various issues associated with imcompetence, there is also the very significant issue of the stigma that I believe many associate with opioid misuse. There is an unspoken presumption on the part of many that people who knowingly misuse a prescription drug are bad people who are guilty of a heinous criminal act, and who therefore must bear the consequences of their own decisions/actions. These various reasons are why we have such an uphill battle in making any headway on this national public health crisis.

Great write up. Even I feel that “pain pills” should not be taken frequently. They scale down the immunity. In order to avoid frequent pain, we should do the needful and according to me practicing Yoga is a positive step that minimizes such chances. I practice yoga to keep myself healthy and rejuvenated. I practice it at home. Yes….i don’t need to go for any yoga classes. Thanks to Veria. Their Yoga with Life DVD (shop.veria.com/.../B001DYFD0O.htm )has made it possible.
